How much of a time commitment is Pulse and what is Pulse’s rehearsal schedule like during the semester?

Pulse is set up in a way that intentionally allows its members to commit as much (or as little) time as they want to the club. Each active member is expected to participate in at least one piece in our end-of-semester showcase, excluding our opening and closing pieces.

Pulse rehearsals are split up in three rounds in which pieces will have two-hour long rehearsals each week, and then at the end of the semester in preparation for the showcase, each piece gets an additional two rehearsals during what we so lovingly call Hell Week. In other words, each member will have to commit at least 8 hours to Pulse to be considered active, but each member can decide how many pieces they want to be in based on their schedule, along with the style and choreographer of each piece.

What events does Pulse have besides its end-of-semester showcase?

Pulse hosts a number of events throughout the semester, including a photoshoot, masterclasses with our alumni, promotional concept video shoots, and non-dance related bonding events to promote a tight-knit and positive community. One of our most beloved traditions is our bi-semester party Pulsapalooza!

Who choreographs showcase pieces?

All of the pieces in our end-of-semester showcase are choreographed by Pulse members! We pride ourselves in giving as many of our members as possible the opportunity to bring their visions to life on the stage each semester. Members that want to choreograph fill out a form each semester, and in-round choreographers are chosen by e-board based on factors such as style, past pulse involvement, and rehearsal space availability. Pulse members who are not chosen for in-round showcase pieces can still choreograph a piece to be in the show! These are called out-of-round pieces and allow members to be more specific with the number of people in their piece, but differ in that board cannot guarantee a weekly rehearsal space.

Are there any opportunities to choreograph besides showcase?

Yes! Pulse member can also create a concept video, called Pulse Projects, in which they choreograph and film a dance video with other pulse members. Pulse members who do not want to can also teach classes. Check out the Gallery to see some past projects!

What style of dance does Pulse offer / specialize in?

Pulse welcomes and encourages a range of including contemporary, jazz, musical theater, hip hop, and tap. Many of our members are versatile in the styles they train in and many of our choreographers would not classify their style under a single category. We do our best to exhibit a diverse range of styles in our end-of-semester showcases, however contemporary and jazz are the most common amongst our current members. That being said, we encourage dancers of all backgrounds and style preferences to audition for Pulse!
